A statement from the UAE's state-run media said that couples should marry immediately to give legal status to children born out of wedlock. The statement warned that if the parents do not recognize the child and do not take care of him, they will face a criminal trial and could face up to two years in prison.
Earlier in the UAE, having sex before marriage and having children was a felony, but now it would be a crime not to adopt children born out of wedlock. In 2017, a South African man and his Ukrainian fianc were arrested in the United Arab Emirates after a woman with abdominal pain was found to be pregnant. Emirati police also detained the couple and produced them in court under the provisions of having sex without marriage. Recent legal reforms are aimed at maintaining regional competition with Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has decided to facilitate foreign investment and grant citizenship to skilled workers.
